US Navy Successfully Tests Common Control System On Unmanned Underwater Vehicle

A surrogate Large Displacement Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (LDUUV) is submerged in the water in preparation for a test to demonstrate the capability of the Navy’s Common Control System (CCS) at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport in Puget Sound, Wash. in December 2015.

The Navy tested the system on a surrogate large diameter unmanned underwater vehicle (LDUUV) last month at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Keyport in Puget Sound, Wash. The Dec. 7-11 test showed that operators could use the control system to plan and execute several surveillance and intelligence preparation missions, according to a news release from Naval Air Systems Command.

28ft (8.5m) long and weighing 10,800lb (4,900kg), Seahorse is capable of a range of pre-programmed independent operations.

Sea Maverick is another derivative of Seahorse and a refinement of the Sea Stalker program:
The Sea Maverick is larger and faster than the Sea Stalker – 48-inch diameter with a top speed approaching 15 knots while submerged. This increase in size changes the functionality completely as it is no longer able to be launched via a submarine DDS, therefore requiring a support ship, like LCS, or a complex redesign for a SSGN D5 missile tube launch. In September of 2009 the Sea Maverick UUV completed operational testing with the Joint Interagency Task Force (JIATF) South off the coast of Key West, Florida. The UUV was deployed using the NAWC 38 Ranger class support ship operated by the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) and maintained mission support communications via satellite with JIATF South (United States Southern Command, 2009).
